Sound-forward design is how I reveal the emotional architecture within a project, whether I’m building it visually, textually, or sonically. I grew up translating myself for every situation that felt foreign to my sensibilities. Those versions were never fractures. They were frequencies. Now I attune to every project the way I learned to read a room, synesthetically.

My work enters through the body before the mind can hesitate. When it lands, the mechanisms creating it disappear.

Creative Direction for Projects

I direct, write, produce, and collaborate on films, theatre, television, installations, campaigns, and artist-led work where emotional architecture, sound, and music are integral to the creative vision.

I work with brands, institutions, directors, producers, and artists to refine a project’s core character through tone, rhythm, atmosphere, narrative, visual direction, and audience experience.

My creative practice is most useful during development, before production, or when a project is ready to be sharpened before it meets the public.

My expertise breaks the sound barrier, extending beyond sound and music to shape visual, physical, digital, and spatial work as well.

It is a sanctuary for taste, originality, and artful decision-making in the age of AI. It offers diagnostics, private sessions, and frameworks for people whose work depends on refined creative judgment.

A Brief History

Mikaal Sulaiman is a multidisciplinary artist and the founder of Black Enso, an Aesthetic Intelligence company. In 2026, he became the first Black artist to win the Tony Award for Sound Design, for the revival of Death of a Salesman, following a previous nomination for Macbeth. He works across theatre, film, television, composition, and writing. His other Broadway credits include Downstate, Other Desert Cities, Doubt, An Enemy of the People, and Art, and he was the original sound designer of three Pulitzer Prize-winning plays: Fat Ham, Fairview, and Primary Trust. He has written for two seasons of Ramy Youssef’s #1 Happy Family USA (A24/Amazon MGM Studios) and previously led Yale’s MFA Sound Design program. His honors include a Creative Capital Award, the 2024 Obie Award for Sustained Achievement in Design, and the Henry Hewes Design Award.
